Puppenwirklichkeit ist Teil eines umfassenderen künstlerischen Projekts, das im Rahmen des Forschungsprogramms der Ungarischen Akademie der Künste entwickelt wurde. Die Arbeit untersucht die zeitgenössische Relevanz von Jo-Ha-Kyū – dem altjapanischen dramaturgischen und rhythmischen Prinzip von Einführung, Entwicklung und plötzlichem Abschluss.

In der traditionellen Bunraku-Puppenspielkunst strukturiert Jo-Ha-Kyū nicht nur die Erzählung, sondern auch die Bewegung der Puppen, das Tempo der Gesten sowie die Beziehung zwischen Klang und Bewegung. Es wirkt als verborgenes Motorprinzip emotionaler Wirkung: Aufmerksamkeit wird gelenkt, Spannung aufgebaut, und Bedeutung entsteht durch Rhythmus. Dieses Prinzip ist tief in der japanischen Zeitauffassung verwurzelt, in der Schönheit des Übergangs und in der Bedeutung von ma – der aufgeladenen Leere zwischen den Ereignissen.

In meiner Installation experimentiere ich mit Jo-Ha-Kyū durch Bilder, Licht, Rhythmus und die unheimliche Logik der Puppenspielkunst. Abstrakte Papierpuppengesichter dienen als Projektionsflächen für wechselnde Tempi, dokumentarische Fragmente und propagandistische Bildwelten. Die Struktur erzeugt eine Wahrnehmung, die einem Echo-Kammer-Effekt ähnelt: Kohärenz wird gespürt, bevor sie verstanden wird.

Meine weitergehende künstlerische Praxis überträgt Jo-Ha-Kyū auf postdramatische und nicht-lineare performative Kontexte. Hier existiert eine strenge rhythmische Ordnung innerhalb eines unvorhersehbaren Raums. Die Betrachtenden nehmen eine innere Logik wahr, während sie zugleich mit Fragmentierung konfrontiert sind. In Puppenwirklichkeit wird dieses Paradox zu einem Werkzeug, um zeitgenössische Mechanismen digitaler Manipulation, algorithmischer Propaganda, informationeller Verzerrung und der Choreografie von Aufmerksamkeit zu untersuchen.

Die Arbeit zielt nicht darauf ab, die Betrachtenden zu kontrollieren, sondern Kontrolle selbst sichtbar zu machen. Humor und Selbstreflexion verhindern passive Rezeption und laden dazu ein, zu bewussten Mitgestaltenden zu werden. Die Forschung ist sowohl theoretisch als auch praktisch angelegt: Jo-Ha-Kyū fungiert hier als kompositorische, kognitive und ethische Struktur, erforscht durch gelebte Erfahrung, Intuition, Wahrnehmung und Rhythmus.

Puppet Reality is part of a broader artistic project developed within the research program of the Hungarian Academy of Arts. The work investigates the contemporary relevance of Jo-Ha-Kyū—the ancient Japanese dramaturgical and rhythmic principle of introduction, development, and sudden conclusion.

In traditional Bunraku puppetry, Jo-Ha-Kyū structures not only the narrative but also the movement of the puppets, the pacing of gestures, and the relationship between sound and motion. It is a hidden engine of emotional impact: attention is guided, tension is shaped, and meaning emerges through rhythm. This principle is rooted in the Japanese perception of time, the beauty of transition, and the importance of ma—the charged emptiness between events.

In my installation, I experiment with Jo-Ha-Kyū through images, light, rhythm, and the uncanny logic of puppetry. Abstract paper puppet faces become projection surfaces for shifting tempos, documentary fragments, and propagandistic imagery. The structure produces a sensation similar to an echo chamber: coherence is felt before it is understood.

My wider artistic practice applies Jo-Ha-Kyū within postdramatic and non-linear performative contexts. Here, a strict rhythmic order exists inside an unpredictable space. The viewer senses internal logic while encountering fragmentation. In Puppet Reality, this paradox becomes a tool to examine contemporary mechanisms of digital manipulation, algorithmic propaganda, informational distortion, and the choreography of attention.

The work does not aim to control the viewer, but to reveal control itself. Humor and self-reflection prevent passive consumption, inviting the viewer to become a conscious participant. The research is both theoretical and practical: Jo-Ha-Kyū functions here as a compositional, cognitive, and ethical structure, explored through lived experience, intuition, perception, and rhythm.
